Highland Springs High wide receiver and defensive back Chris Thaxton promised his mother, Angie, before she died last month that he and his teammates would win another state football championship.

They had to work hard for it, but the reigning 5A state champion Springers are in position to fulfill that promise after defeating visiting Norview of Norfolk 28-25 in Saturday afternoon’s semifinal.

The Springers, 13-1 and winners of 12 consecutive games, face Stone Bridge (12-2) in next week’s final in Hampton. It is a rematch of last year’s title game.
